Song of the Day - I love you

So it's a total bummer that summer is "over" and now we're in regular life and how boring is that right?

Here's a song that makes you get up and dance. No ifs, ands, or buts, you just have to get up and shake it to this song.

Holy Crap! This song rocks.

Daddy Daughter Date

It’s one o’clock in the afternoon and a blonde woman wearing a black tshirt and grey pencil skirt is sitting in her silver car at the drive-thru for Crown Burger. It is eighty-two degrees on this day at the end of July and it is overcast and barely rainy. She has the windows rolled down and is listening to Tones on Tails with the volume turned up really loud because this is a really good song. She is suffering from her monthly visit from Aunt Flo and therefore greatly anticipating that chocolate milkshake she just ordered.

The door to the restaurant opens and she observes a man in a plaid sleeveless shirt, trucker hat, jeans and construction boots holding the door open for a little girl. The little girl has medium length, medium brown hair and is wearing glasses. Her tshirt has a floral motif, and her many tiered ruffled skirt is a screaming, shocking pink; so are her matching flip-flops. She is holding a styrofoam cup in each hand; each emblazoned with a large letter ‘k’ written in sharpie. The man walks forward, but the little girl pauses at the curb. When the man encourages her forward, she jumps down onto the driveway and walks hand-in-hand with the man in front of the silver car. At the sidewalk they pause, and jump together up onto the sidewalk. The man proceeds forward towards the parking lot, stepping off the curb but is caused to stop because he is still holding hands with the little girl and she has stopped because she is preparing to jump down. Sufficiently corrected, the man backs up and steps up onto the sidewalk again in order to jump in tandem with the little girl. They walk off into the distance, presumably towards their parked car. The girl is skipping.

The woman pulls forward to pay for her burger and shake.

There's nothing good on the radio

Except for this. Thank goodness for Chvrches. They're Scottish too, which makes them all the more excellent.

I've posted a few times about how there are times when I can't find anything good on the radio, and this is one of those times. (I hear you, Ducky)

Sometimes I get so frustrated with the radio that I can't listen to it any more and I just turn it off.

I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to this because I have yet to stock my car with my favourite CDs, but I've found that when I'm in these moods even the best of the best of music to take me out of my mood sounds bad and that just ruins it for me, so silence is the best option.

I still love you, Sirius, I just think we need to take a break right now.

What would I do without the Radio?

Back in the olden days, before the internet was born, I had very limited means to introduce me to new music. Basically, I had the radio.

My first foray into the music world was the influence of my best friend’s older brother, who introduced me to “Glass Houses”. We also had neighbours who would blast their music and a few of my friends had older siblings.

When I was nine, my grandfather passed away and I inherited his clock radio. It had a sleep function (and an analog, not digital clock), so I would fall asleep listening to CKLG. I loved listening to the radio and dreamed of being a radio personality one day.

When I got older, I started going to church dances and was introduced to alternative music. What a golden time for me! I learned all about The Smiths, The Cure, The The, etc. It was so wonderful and I will be forever grateful to Hanu, Don, Mark, Taylor, Bryce, Kate, Ted and a bunch of others for bringing this genre of music into my life.

Once I was introduced to alternative music, I had to learn about more bands, so I started reading music magazines like Smash Hits and Spin. I also read The Georgia Strait which is a local music newspaper in Vancouver. Sometimes when I’m homesick I’ll check it out online.

I could never afford to buy much music as a youth, so I did a lot of research before investing in an album. One of the ways I would know if the album was good was if 3 or more songs were played on the radio. Unfortunately, Vancouver didn’t have an alternative radio station until I was in my very late teens and early twenties. I did listen to CFRO – and independent station, and CITR, the station at UBC, but their signal was very weak in Langley/Cloverdale and you had to listen at the right time, and I had a lot of things pulling for my free time. (boys, school, parties, babysitting, boys, the mall).

We used to love it when we could take a trip down to Seattle and listen to 107.7 the End and actually hear good music on the radio.

The early nineties was a beautiful time for radio in Vancouver. We finally got an alternative station! I actually had all my presets on my radio set to good stations! It was wonderful.

Now I have my best friend, Sirius XM. I occasionally listen to 101.9 the End, a local alternative station, but ADS. I hate ‘em. I want to hear good music. Plus, overplay. I want to listen to a huge variety of good music! I listen to 80’s on 8, First Wave, Lithium, XMU, and Alt Nation channels on Sirius. (and sometimes Disney Channel, shhh – don’t tell) Sirius’ rates have gone up considerably, from $7.00 a month to $30.00, so DH has cancelled our subscription. He is convinced that they will come back with a better offer so that we don’t have to cancel, but I just don’t know what I’m going to do if I can’t listen to the radio!

Storm's Comin' Ani

I love this time of year – its drive with the windows down weather!!

I was on my way to Del Taco for fish tacos and rejoiced that the sun was not blazing down – it was actually cloudy. The kind of oppressive cloudy where the roiling clouds are bearing down on you with impending doom. The impending doom of wind and rain and thunder and lightning. I had to do a little happy dance on my way to the car celebrating the weather.

Side note: I thought I had made up a word with roiling (rolling and boiling), but spell check didn’t spazz out so I had to look it up and it’s an actual word.
Verb (used with object)
1.
To render (water, wine, etc.) turbid by stirring up sediment.
2.
To disturb or disquiet; irritate; vex: to be roiled by a delay.
Verb (used without object)
3.
To move or proceed turbulently.

Origin: 1580–90;  origin uncertain

un·roiled, adjective

roil, royal.

2. Annoy, fret, ruffle, exasperate, provoke, rile
.

I’m happy and sad about that.

Other side note: Whattheheck Del Taco? No lime in my second fish taco? Where’s my lime, bishes?!

What can I say? I love weather. I love the changes, the unpredictability, the clouds, the wind, the rain – you know. The shapes the clouds make, the colours of the clouds and the sky. The feeling of the wind, that it can be calm and soothing and then immediately whip into a frenzy and be all crazy. The way the wind feels against my skin and in my hair.

The air is all electric and pending. There is that crazy, tingly, butterflies-right-before-going-on-stage feeling of something coming. I can feel it in my bones and on my skin and in my hair.
I love how the sky feels so close, like its right on top of you and peering over your shoulder about to do all kinds of naughty things.

I love this time of year.

Inspired by the commute

So I only have a 15 minute commute, but I've been doing it so long that my brain just kind of goes on auto-pilot. Sometimes I pull into my driveway and I don't remember my drive at all.

The other day I saw this bumper sticker on the tailgate of a pick-up truck that said "Gay Porn Star". Promptly after passing me, he hit a bump and some trash came flying out of the back of the pick-up; like, fast food wrappers. One piece, then another, and then some more, and I thought to myself "Littering Gay Porn Star".

That's all.
